2 Radikale Hoffnung - Kunst und Arbeitskampf Group Exhibition Kunstmuseum Gelsenkirchen Poster 6/2026

The international group exhibition Radical Hope examines how artists from modernity to the present day have approached the theme of worker resistance – documentarily, poetically, critically, radically, in solidarity and from personal experience. In the early twentieth century, art brought working-class struggle against social injustice into focus. From the 1960s, labour struggles influenced artistic practice when artists themselves went on strike.
And beyond the realm of art, resistance against working conditions has, to the present, generated impressive images and practices that move in step with global developments. Gelsenkirchen is also home to a feminist chapter in the history of worker resistance. In the early 1980s, female workers fought for equal pay, thereby becoming part of a European movement which also included the campaign ‘Wages for Housework’ initiated by feminist artists in Italy. Both positions feature in the exhibition, which highlights various artistic perspectives and practices within the labour movement and at the same time looks at the manifold overlaps between different aesthetics
of protest in art and everyday life.

At 01:23 local time on 26 April 1986, the worst accident ever recorded in the history of civil nuclear power occurred in Reactor Unit 4 of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant. About 10 years later, in 1995, the German Hygiene Museum in Dresden commissioned the photographer Volker Kreidler to document the consequences of the disaster for people, places and the natural environment. This commission evolved through a nature study in 2015 and further trips to Kyiv last year, into a highly topical account of the current political situation in Ukraine. At the heart of the 2025 works lies the resilience of the people in Kyiv and the Exclusion Zone, also in the context of conditions during the Russian war of aggression.

5 Buildings on Standby Hendrikje Alpermann adocs Verlag, Hamburg Book 272 15,8 × 24 cm 3/2026

Buildings on Standby describes the vacant high-rise buildings A–E in Halle-Neustadt as places of uncertain future, where the possibilities/impossibilities of urban planning after socialism are being negotiated. For more than 20 years, four of the five tower blocks have been vacant and remain on standby – in a state of future-oriented availability and a contested space between shutdown and reactivation. At the interface of actor-network theory and ethnographic urban research, the study examines this state in its temporal, material and political dimensions. It shows that buildings on standby cost a lot of energy, harbour risks and become a bargaining chip for trust and responsibility. The book opens up new perspectives on shrinking cities, interstitial spaces and urban transformation – in and beyond the post-socialist space.

6 Dinge / Things / 物件 Arne Schmitt Spector Books, Leipzig Book 192 13 × 20 cm 3/2026

In Things, Arne Schmitt explores an everyday yet complex cultural practice: going out for coffee. During a trip through Taiwan, he visited eighteen cafés, dedicating an essay to each—observations situated between global specialty coffee culture, local particularities, and personal encounters.
The texts are accompanied by eighteen photographs of stones found along the island’s coastline—contemplative studies of form and a homage to collecting stones on the beach.
The title refers to Georges Perec’s novel of the same name from the 1960s and the lifestyle of its characters shaped by objects and consumption, as well as to Albert Renger-Patzsch’s interwar photobook project and its focus on form. In his montage of images and texts, Schmitt brings these two lines together in a central question: is it legitimate, in politically turbulent times, to cultivate a pleasure in form?

7 Outwards Susanne Brodhage Distanz Verlag, Berlin Book 152 22 × 28,9 cm 2/2026

Outwards brings together a hundred individual portraits of men and women, showing them as individuals and, at the same time, as anonymous representatives of a diverse social fabric. Paired and grouped solely on the basis of external characteristics such as clothing or posture, the images, in their arrangement, also allude to algorithmic methods of systematisation and raise questions about spatial perception today in relation to pattern recognition. With an essay by Hanne Loreck.

over an abandoned warehouse in the centre
of Berlin. Our aims were to clash different
genres, encourage artists and audiences
to come together who wouldn’t otherwise
meet and to create as much new work as
possible that responded to the space. At
first we wondered if Berlin needed
another cultural space but from the overwhelming
response it was soon clear we

opened on May 8 and closed on October 2

Film Undone presents contributions introducing unmade and unfinished film projects, film ideas realised in non-filmic media, as well as films that remained unseen in their intended form and at their intended time. These tentative and careful probes dedicated to singular projects reflect the importance of primary materials before and beyond the film. Bringing them together as Elements of a Latent Cinema opens a space to consider cases from various political geographies and historical moments in relation. Latency prompts to think differently about what has remained invisible in cinema than under deficit-centred categories such as failure, loss, or incompletion. It marks a sustained potentiality for things to change their condition, to affect us and set us in motion.

Edizione Multicolore

Two shows showcase works by the recently graduated artist that are now entering the new step in their practices.
The title of the show borrows the concept of the word “liminality” from twentieth century folklorist Arnold van Gennep and Victor Turner.
In anthropology, liminality (from the Latin word līmen, meaning "a threshold") is the quality of ambiguity or disorientation that occurs in the middle stage of a rite of passage, when participants no longer hold their pre-ritual status but have not yet begun the transition to the status they will hold when the rite is complete.

PolArt is an artist in residence program where a group of early career artists is invited to join the scientific community
of marine biologists during their expeditions in the Arctic ocean. The residency ran annually from 2007-2013. Twenty-two artists participated during these years.
Every year a group show, the PolArt exhibition, was part of the Tromsø Kunstforening program.
Since then Tromsø Kunstforening has wanted to establish a platform for the participating artists to work more in-depth.
Our curator/public programs manager Hanne Gudrun Gulljord has been working with this as part of an in MA Curatorial practice
at the Faculty of Fine Art, Music and Design, University of Bergen.

design a r c  +  paul thalmeier

Sounding Architecture critically examines the liminal space where art, architecture and music might overlap. Research in this case takes the form of bold new initiatives in cross-disciplinary collaborations, as historically, sound and architectural principles are discretized, rarely considered as contingent overlapping parameters in each field, though, in truth, they are. Anyone who has heard a piece of music in a space can learn to be sensitive to the fact that the architecture is a contributing factor to the resonance and, therefore, the music enfolding in a space. With the realization that architecture is ostensibly an instrument in all sonic conditions, architecture can then be factored into the musical composition.

Film in the Present Tense is the closing event of RE MI.

Organised by LaborBerlin in cooperation with the Film Institute of the Berlin University of the Arts, Film in the Present Tense will bring together filmmakers, artists, programmers, technicians and representatives from museums, independent film labs and cinemas to address these questions and formulate ideas, possibilities and plans of action for keeping film current and alive. In addition to six panel discussions, there will be screenings and expanded cinema performances presenting some of the ways in which film continues to exist in the present tense.

"...Brothels and colonies are two extreme types of heterotopia, and if we think, after all, that the boat is a floating piece of space, a place without a place, that exists by itself, that is closed in on itself and at the same time is given over to the infinity of the sea and that, from port to port, from tack to tack, from brothel to brothel, it goes as far as the colonies in search of the most precious treasures they conceal in their gardens, you will understand why the boat has not only been for our civilization, from the sixteenth century until the present, the great instrument of economic development (I have not been speaking of that today), but has been simultaneously the greatest reserve of the imagination. The ship is the heterotopia par excellence..."

Welcome to our magic island Hy Brasil,
a land reigned over by as yet
unseen beauty and where dark fears
assume shape and body.
Hy Brasil is said to emerge periodically
out of dense fog for two days every
seven years.
The Laboratory of Visibility demonstrates:
Hy Brasil appears everywhere and always.

Club Electro Putere, Craiova

Atelierul are o latura practica, aplicata.

Marburg 1950

"Umgekehrt gibt es Heterotopien, die nicht
im Modus der Ewigkeit, sondern in dem
des Festes mit der Zeit verbunden sind:
nicht ewigkeitsorientierte, sondern
zeitweilige Heterotopien. Dazu gehört
sicher das Theater, aber auch der Jahr-
markt, dieser wunderbar leere Platz
am Rande der Stadt und zuweilen auch
in deren Zentrum, der sich ein oder
zwei mal im Jahr mit Buden, Ständen,
den unterschiedlichsten Gegenständen,
mit Faustkämpfern, Schlangenfrauen
und Wahrsagerinnen füllt."
